The patents reveal a flagship with extremely curved edges, and almost no bezels. There’s no notch or hole-punch cutout on the display, and we don’t find any evidence of a mechanism for a pop-up camera. This suggests the phone features an under-display camera, similar to last year’s OPPO and Xiaomi showcased prototypes.

The patents also reveal that the phone, just like the Mate 30 Pro, will not have volume buttons. Users will need to use a virtual slider to control the volume which will appear on the phone’s frame after double tapping. While the patents show an identical “waterfall display,” both have a slightly different camera system on the back. One shows a quad-camera setup similar to the Mate 30 Pro while the other shows a triple-camera array that is stacked vertically.

Both patents were filed by Huawei last year in October, so it’s possible that this year Huawei might be planning to launch a new Mate series phone with a camera under the display. Whether Huawei can beat Xiaomi and OPPO to launch the first smartphone with a selfie camera under-display remains to be seen Samsung, too, is rumored this year to launch a new phone with a camera under the display.
