2018 was not a great year for Apple. The sales of iPhone dropped by 7% in the second half of 2018 compared to same period in 2017. Adding insult to injury, TrendForce has predicted that the Apple iPhones can be outperformed by Huawei phones.
The consumer demand has fallen and the expectation is that the global production of iPhones will be 1.41 billion units in 2019. This will be 3.3% less than in 2018. According to TrendForce trade issues between the USA and China can result in further decline in iPhone production by around 5%.
The major reason for the decline in iPhone sales is that almost 10 million volume dropped in sales from the Chinese market. There has been a ban on a few iPhones in the Chinese market as well.
TrendForce predicted that the production volume of Apple will fall to 189 million units Thus its market share in 2019 will fall to 13% from 15%.
As for Huawei, its production volume increase was 30% year-on-year in 2018. In 2018 the Huawei units produced were 205 million and in 2019 it is expected to reach 225 million units. If it is reached, Huawei will have 16% global market share and it will overtake Apple and become the second leading smartphone maker in the world, just bellow Samsung.
