Huawei works on competitive chip for Nvidia

The Chinese technology group Huawei is now said to have reached its chip development at a stand, on which important Nvidia products can be replaced almost equally. This goes from a report of the Wall Street Journals out.

Patterns come in May

Accordingly, the company is currently preparing for the first tests of its latest and so far most powerful AI processor. In the future, the ASCEND 910D is intended to serve as an alternative to high-end chips by the US semiconductor manufacturer Nvidia, which are required for the calculations related to the development of AI models.

According to the report, Huawei has already received talks with several Chinese technology companies in order to examine the technical feasibility of the new chip. The first patterns of the ASCEND 910D are expected to be delivered at the end of May. Huawei strives to achieve a higher performance with this new generation of its Ascend processors than Nvidia’s H100 chip.

At the same time, Reuters reported that Huawei wants to start Chinese customers with the mass delivery of its previous model, the ASCEND 910C in the coming month. This intensifies the efforts in China to become more independent of US technology in the field of artificial intelligence, the most important products of which can be reached by smuggling due to the Ebargos anyway.

A long way

For years, Huawei and other Chinese manufacturers have been trying to catch up with Nvidia in the area of ​​high-performance AI chips-but so far with limited success. NVIDIA is considered industry leader, especially in the training of AI models, in which enormous computing power is required.

The US government has taken measures in recent years to limit China’s access to advanced AI technology. This also includes a ban on sales for Nvidia’s top products such as the H100, which was banned in 2022 before its official market launch in China. The latest model, the B200, is also affected by the export restrictions.
