Hyundai offers OTA updates for infotainment of Ioniq 5

Hyundai plans to install future updates to the Ioniq 5’s infotainment system via the SIM card installed in the vehicle, thereby eliminating manual updates or even workshop visits. Hyundai offers OTA updates in Europe for the first time. However, a final manual update has yet to be performed.

Hyundai had already presented the electric Ioniq 5 in February as a so-called CUV (Crossover Utility Vehicle). The new Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) on which the vehicle is based is also used by the Kia EV6 (driving report) and the Genesis GV60. The infotainment system uses two 12.25-inch displays that are standard equipment.

Two OTA updates per year

For the infotainment system of the Ioniq 5, Hyundai plans to release two OTA updates per year, for example, to distribute maps and general updates for the system. Hyundai also speaks of increased safety and improved service quality. The manufacturer explains that the first OTA update is already planned for mid-June. The distribution should be “gradual” for all Ioniq 5 owners who have installed at least version 220211 as base software. The second update in 2022 is planned for the second half of the year. The manufacturer has not yet commented on the scope of the update.

A final manual update is required

The base software mentioned by Hyundai with version number 220211 is a final update that owners must manually download and install in order to install OTA updates in the background in the future. This version is accessible through the Website for navigation updates and must be transferred to the vehicle via a USB stick. Owners can do this themselves or have it done by a Hyundai dealer. Future OTA updates should be downloaded and installed automatically by the vehicle.

Hyundai explains that the infotainment system and navigation can continue to be used while the process is running in the background. However, customers can also decide for themselves when and where they want to update their software for the vehicle. After the update is complete, the owner will be notified of the for android and for iOS available Bluelink app on the smartphone.
