In 2023, TikTok surpasses all other apps in in-app purchases with $10 billion
Recently, Bloomberg shared an analysis of app spending for 2023. The report suggests that the revenue from app spending increased by 11% during the last year. The increase was largely contributed by video platforms. However, the revenue from games decreased by 2% on a yearly basis. According to the report, TikTok is the first app to cross the $10 billion in in-app purchases milestone.
The system that enables users to tip their preferred producers and live streams helped them reach the milestone. According to market experts, the social media platform operated by ByteDance has “unlocked the key to monetization on mobile.” In 2023, the spending habits of users shifted from spending on games to apps. Overall, dating apps, streaming, and user-generated material were paid more by users.
The biggest revenue-generating factor for smartphones is still advertising. Almost two-thirds of mobile sales account for mobile ads. As compared to 2022, an 8% increase of $362 billion in revenue was generated with the help of mobile ads in 2023. In addition to this, the analysis showcases the time spent by users on mobiles. The report indicates that consumers now use smartphones for longer. With an average of more than six hours per person per day, Indonesia came in first among the nations. The top 10 areas saw an average of five hours per day of app usage, along with a 3% rise in spending.
Furthermore, the analysis also features the most downloaded apps in 2023. Reportedly, Shein and Temu were the most downloaded apps. In fact, Temu was the most downloaded app in 125 markets. In other regions, spending and popularity in the travel and ticketing industries increased. By late 2023, consumer expenditure on generative AI apps surpassed $10 billion, according to the data.
