Instagram is working on Friend Map feature

A new feature is on its way to one of the Meta’s social media platform. According to some recent pieces of information, Instagram is working on a new feature named Friend Map. This information comes from Alessandro Paluzzi who shared the screenshots of the new feature on X/Twitter. The new feature works by showing the friends on a world map with their posts. In addition to this, users can leav notes on the map. From this perspective, the feature appears quite similar to the one found on Snapchat’s Snap Map.

According to details, users can enable a Ghost mode for this feature that will hide the last active location of users. Besides this, the Friend Map enables users to see one another’s location. One thing to notice here is that location sharing is end-to-end encrypted. Anything shared by a user appears with a location tag on the map. Moreover, the screenshots indicate that a user’s location will only be updated when they open the Instagram app.

Right now, there are no details on when the Friend Map feature will roll out. The shared images, on the other hand, suggest that the development of feature has been completed. We can expect it to arrive to the beta version of the app in the next upcoming weeks. Followed by this, it will arrive to the stable version of the app in a couple of months once thorough testing is complete. Instagram has already hijacked Snapchat’s stories function, and with the most recent addition to its list, Instagram will further displace Snapchat users.
