In the coming week, Intel will present the successor to its Ice Lake CPUs for compact notebooks. These processors from the Tiger Lake-U family will have significantly higher clock rates than their direct predecessors, as current leaks show.
According to Twitter user @TUM_APISAK, the upcoming Core i7-1185G7 will clearly outperform the Ice Lake top model Intel Core i7-1065G7. The new CPU opposes the 1.3 gigahertz basic and 3.9 gigahertz turbo clocks with 3 gigahertz basic and up to 4.8 gigahertz turbo clocks. In addition, the Tiger Lake chips will make a significant leap in terms of GPU performance. For the first time, Intel has integrated the new Xe graphics unit in the 11th generation of core processors. This should have 96 execution units in the i7-1185G7 and achieve a maximum clock rate of a remarkable 1.55 gigahertz.
The other leaked names of Tiger Lake CPUs are the Core i7-1165G7, the Core i5-1145G7, and Core i5-1135G7 as well as the Core i3-1115G4. There are also the Pentium Gold 7505 and the Celeron 6305 as well as the Celeron 6205. What does not change with the U-series processors is the number of CPU cores. The Core i7 and i5 chips also have four cores and can process up to eight threads in parallel.
The Core i3 and Pentium as well as the Celeron models offer two processing cores and can juggle four threads in parallel. The Core i7-1165G7 clocks with a 2.8 gigahertz base and 4.7 gigahertz turbo clock only slightly lower than the top model. Even a Pentium Gold 7505 should still be able to offer 2 gigahertz base and up to 3.5 gigahertz turbo clock.
In addition to the higher clock rates and the upgrades in the GPU area, Tiger Lake-U has also made a number of significant architectural improvements. So-called Willow Cove cores are used in all processors, which are said to offer more performance per cycle than their Ice Lake counterparts. The upcoming notebook chips will be manufactured using the optimized 10-nanometer process. The innovations of the platform also include support for LPDDR5-RAM, PCIe 4.0, USB 4, and Thunderbolt 4.
Intel will make the official presentation of its latest notebook processors in a few days, more precisely on Wednesday, September 2nd. The first devices with the CPUs of the 11th core generation should be available in stores a few weeks later.
