iOS 15.4: Public beta launched with Face ID with mask recognition

Apple has now released the first public beta for iOS 15.4. This new pre-release brings some interesting new features, including the option to use Face ID with a mask – without an Apple Watch. The new version of the operating system is now being tested by anyone who is interested. This was preceded by the first developer releases earlier this week. Now the first test build of iOS 15.4 is also available as part of the public beta program for anyone who wants to try it out (via MacRumors). This means that end users can now download the iOS beta and try the first new features. The build is based on the developer preview we reported on earlier.

iOS 15.4 and iPadOS 15.4 are major updates that bring new features, some of which were anticipated when iOS 15 launched in the fall. iOS 15.4 brings a new feature to unlock iPhone with Face ID even when wearing a mask, and iPadOS 15.4 introduces Universal Control. When paired with a Mac running at least macOS Monterey 12.3, Universal Control makes it possible to control multiple Macs and iPads with a single cursor and keyboard. In addition, for iOS 15.4 and iPad 15.4 there is something new “under the hood”.

How to join the beta program

Participation in the beta program is free and requires a one-time registration for the program beta.apple.com/sp/en/betaprogram of the corresponding device. This also applies to all beta versions that Apple is testing, so iPhone, iPad, Watch, Mac and TV. To do this, users need to enter their Apple ID and then get the update automatically through the update function. New versions are then automatically downloaded to the device. The new version is now available to registered users as an over-the-air update. Testing the beta is always at your own risk and should not be performed on the production system. iOS 15.4 should be completed in a few weeks.
