iPads can now be repaired yourself

Apple extends its self service repair program: users can repair selected iPad models themselves. The program includes original spare parts, professional tools and instructions for displays, batteries, cameras and charging connections.

Self -repair now also available for iPads

Apple opens its Self service repair program from May 29, 2025 for iPads. Brian Naumann, Apple’s Vice President for AppleCare, emphasizes the company goal of creating durable products that still work reliably even after years. The program initially supports current models such as the iPad with A16 chip, the iPad Mini with A17 Pro and the iPad Pro with M4 processor. The iPad Air from the M2 generation is also part of the offer. Users can then replace various components such as displays, batteries, cameras and loading connections themselves.

Repair options for at home

The system offers access to the same repair manuals, original spare parts and tools, which are also used in Apple stores and in authorized service providers. The instructions are very detailed and contain step-by-step instructions with high-resolution images. In addition, Apple diagnosis sessions are available for troubleshooting and tool sets for borrowing.

The tool cases that Apple offers for rental are the same that are also used in the company’s repair centers. They contain specialized instruments such as display presses, heating plates for secure removal of batteries and precise torque screwdrivers that are essential for the “professional assembly”.

International expansion and background of the program

Apple initially introduced the Self Service repair program 2021 for iPhones after the company reconsidered its position on the subject of repair law. This was done in response to the growing pressure by state laws and the American Commercial Commission FTC, which is committed to a stronger “right to repair”.

Interestingly, Apple was a vehement opponent of the repair law for a long time and argued that improper repairs could represent security risks. The company’s U -turn is seen by observers as a strategic step in order to advance stricter legal regulations.

Process of a self -repair

After the diagnosis, customers can order the required parts and tools via a special online shop. The prices for spare parts correspond to those that are also calculated authorized repair companies. This can be several hundred euros for a display module of the current iPad Pro. Important to know: Defective core components must be returned – as with professional repair companies – in order to receive a credit on the original part purchase. Apple recycles these parts or prepares them for reuse, which is part of the company’s sustainability strategy.
