iPhone 12 Mini Wasted Apple To Cut Production Soon

The iPhone 12 Mini was presented in autumn 2020 and should build on the success of the iPhone SE. But the small Apple smartphone turned out to be a flop, which was already clear in mid-February. The manufacturer is now drawing the necessary conclusions and has cut production sharply.

When it was launched last October, the iPhone 12 Mini went against the trend towards ever-larger smartphones: Because the Mini has a display of just 5.3 inches, which is significantly smaller than is common with smartphones today. However, there is a reason for a large display and the broad range of smartphone users has long since got used to large-screen diagonals.

The iPhone 12 Mini turned out to be slow-moving, and a month ago there were reports of “modest” sales. At that time it was said that the smallest iPhone 12 only made up around five percent of total sales of the latest model generation in January.

This is now having an impact on production: According to a report by Nikkei Asia, Apple has cut iPhone orders by around a fifth. The large models are not affected, the reduction is almost exclusively due to the iPhone 12 Mini. According to the business medium, Apple is said to have even instructed suppliers to “temporarily stop the production of components specifically for the Mini”.

According to Nikkei, Apple reduced production of the iPhone 12 Mini by around 70 percent in the first half of 2021, which is certainly a considerable cut – other sources cited even higher figures because the business media writes that the 70 percent is a “cautious” estimate be.

Apple is still planning to build (and sell) around 230 million iPhones in 2021. The Californian manufacturer expects the next models, in particular, to sell well, because Apple plans to produce “only” 75 million units in the first half of the year.
