Apple has quietly been working with Starlink and T-Mobile to expand satellite connectivity for iPhones, and the feature is officially live with iOS 18.3. This milestone comes ahead of the full service rollout, bringing enhanced satellite capabilities to newer iPhone models.
When Apple first launched SOS via Satellite in 2022 with the iPhone 14, it partnered exclusively with Globalstar. Now, two years later, Apple has expanded its satellite ecosystem by enabling Starlink connectivity. According to a recent Bloomberg report, iOS 18.3 unlocks this feature, laying the groundwork for broader satellite-based services.
Starlink connectivity through T-Mobile is still in its early stages. The feature is currently available to select T-Mobile customers as part of an early access beta, with a broader rollout across the US scheduled for late 2025.
Users invited to the beta received this notification:
“You’re in the T-Mobile Starlink beta. You can now stay connected with texting via satellite from virtually anywhere. To start experiencing coverage beyond, please update to iOS 18.3.”
T-Mobile’s official press release confirms that the beta program is free and open to all T-Mobile postpaid voice customers with a compatible device. The program will begin publicly in early 2025.
Mike Katz, T-Mobile’s President of Marketing, Strategy, and Products, shared his excitement about the program’s potential:
“T-Mobile Starlink is the first major low-earth orbit constellation in the world paired with terrestrial cellular spectrum, making the phone in your pocket work in areas of the U.S. that have never, and probably never will, have ground-based coverage. This is a truly groundbreaking engineering breakthrough, ensuring T-Mobile customers can feel confident that if they can see the sky, they’ll be covered.”
All iPhone 14 and newer models support SOS via Satellite, and now they’re also equipped to take advantage of Starlink’s capabilities. This feature is expected to provide better connectivity in remote areas, ensuring you stay connected even when traditional networks fail.
Additionally, rumors suggest that Apple may extend satellite connectivity features to the Apple Watch Ultra 3 in the near future, further enhancing its lineup of connected devices.
For now, iPhone users with iOS 18.3 are leading the way in satellite-enabled communication, thanks to this groundbreaking collaboration with Starlink and T-Mobile.
