iPhone 16 fresh design with new AI features
Apple has just introduced the iPhone 16. The new iOS smartphones come in the typical variants with two iPhone 16 basic models and two Pro versions. Visually, there is little change, because Apple is focusing primarily on new AI features this year. Apple
Apple AI is supposed to make the competition look old
As Apple CEO Tim Cook expressly emphasized at the presentation of the new iPhones, the new smartphones were developed from the outset for use in conjunction with the numerous “Apple Intelligence” functions. The iPhone 16 returns to a design with an aluminum frame, with two vertically arranged cameras on the back.
The iPhone 16 is now available in a total of five colors, with Apple adding new versions in turquoise, purple and light blue to the range in addition to the black and white versions. In terms of sizes, Apple is again relying on a 6.1-inch display for the iPhone 16 in the basic version and a 6.7-inch panel for the iPhone 16 Plus, with both models coming with the pill-shaped “Dynamic Island” of the Pro versions.
What is also new is that Apple has completely dispensed with the usual alert slider and has now installed an “action button” instead, which the user can assign various functions to as desired. However, Apple is not just introducing a single “new” button, but more on that later. Cheap mobile phone tariffs for the new iPhone 16 (ad)
Apple A18 to enable AI features
Apple is finally giving the new iPhones a new platform again. The new Apple A18 is produced in an advanced version of TSMC’s 3nm production and now has six processing cores. The manufacturer promises that the new chip should be up to 30 percent faster than the previous models and with a 40 percent more powerful 5-core graphics unit, it can leave all competitors far behind and sometimes even outperform high-end desktop PCs – at least that’s what Apple claims.
Apple is now running a range of local AI models on the A18’s integrated Neural Processing Unit (NPU) with increased performance, while for more demanding tasks it also plans to use a system of Apple’s own AI servers in a “private cloud”. The user should be able to use advanced AI functions with a high degree of personalization, including their own data, without having to compromise on privacy protection.
The growing technical possibilities surrounding generative artificial intelligence are also set to make the voice assistant Siri much more versatile and useful. While Siri has been increasingly pushed into the background in recent years, the assistant is soon set to improve on a large scale. In this country, however, it will probably take a while, as Europe and Germany are currently completely missing from the list of countries in which “Apple Intelligence” is set to launch soon.
New dual camera system
The cameras on the iPhone 16 are also getting an upgrade. The new additional button on the case is supposed to make accessing the camera even easier. However, Apple is making the additional button a more versatile element than you might expect.
There are also capacitive and pressure-sensitive sensors underneath that can detect a swiping motion or pressure of varying intensity. You can use the button to “press hard” as well as perform zoom movements or use other modes and filters. The iPhone 16 now also has a 48-megapixel camera with 0.5 micrometer pixel edge length, so that quad binning should ultimately produce 12-megapixel photos of the highest quality. Apple is touting an F/1.6 aperture and sensor shift-based optical image stabilization, among other things.
There is also a new 12-megapixel camera with ultra-wide-angle optics, which offers a relatively large sensor pixel edge length of 1.4 micrometers and can capture more light than before. Apple specifies the maximum aperture size as F/2.2 and also advertises that for the first time, autofocus can now be offered on the ultra-wide-angle camera. Apple even goes so far as to claim that the two cameras on the back of the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are actually equivalent to four cameras.
This very exaggerated claim is justified by the fact that the cameras also make zoom and macro shots possible thanks to their high resolution. The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are also now said to have larger batteries. In combination with the efficiency optimizations made to the Apple A18, even longer runtimes should be possible. However, Apple has not yet revealed any specific details about the capacity of the batteries.
Prices and availability in EU
The iPhone 16 costs from 949 euros in EU, while the iPhone 16 Plus costs at least 1099 euros. These prices apply to the versions with 128 GB of internal flash memory. Pre-orders will be possible from September 13, 2024 (Friday), and delivery will take place on September 20.
