iPhone 17 Rumored to Feature High Refresh Rate Display with ProMotion Technology

The standard iPhone 17, set for release in 2025, may introduce a major display upgrade, as rumors point to the inclusion of ProMotion technology. This change would bring a higher refresh rate to Apple’s base iPhone models for the first time, offering smoother scrolling and enhanced visuals previously exclusive to the Pro lineup.

Sources suggest Apple plans to equip the iPhone 17 with low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) panels. These advanced screens are known for their energy efficiency and are key to enabling ProMotion’s dynamic refresh rates, which range from 1Hz to 120Hz. This allows for high-performance features like smoother animation and video playback at the high end, while also delivering always-on display functionality for notifications and widgets at the low end.

Currently, the standard iPhone models rely on older low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) panels capped at 60Hz. Moving to LTPO panels in all iPhone 17 models would mark a significant step forward, aligning Apple’s flagship lineup with industry trends that have widely adopted higher refresh rate displays.

If this rumor holds true, 2025 will see all iPhone models, including the rumored iPhone 17 Air, abandon 60Hz screens altogether. This shift not only eliminates a key distinction between Pro and standard iPhone models but also brings Apple’s displays more in line with those of competing smartphone brands, which largely moved past 60Hz displays some time ago.

The iPhone 17 series is expected to launch in September 2025, following Apple’s usual release schedule. While details are still unconfirmed, this upgrade could signal a significant milestone for the iPhone lineup, featuring standardized advancements across all models.
