iPhone Security: Apple Warns Users For Choosing Simple PIN Codes

A passcode (PIN) needs to be well chosen on the iPhone, because according to Apple not every combination is suitable for optimal protection. If the code turns out to be too simple, the US manufacturer warns against use. But which combinations of numbers should you never use? A list provides information.

If the four- or six-digit PIN is chosen too simply, the iPhone complains. As a reaction, users then receive this message: “This code is easy to guess”. You could still use it, but Apple strongly advises you to set a different code. But which “forbidden” passcodes are on Apple’s blacklist?

Unlock iPhone: Apple’s black list of passcodes

The manufacturer says nothing about it. Remedy now comes from the meaningful website “This PIN Can Be Easily Guessed” . In the self-test and by simply trying out all possible combinations, the “forbidden” passcodes were found out. Exciting: For the automated use, an idiosyncratic construction made of Lego, a Raspberry Pi and an iPhone 6s was used.

The result was a total of 274 four-digit codes and a total of 2910 six-digit codes, which should not be used as a passcode for the iPhone. These include 1111, 1234, 0000, 2580, 5555, 000001, 233332, 656560 and many more. Logical: repetitive, general pattern combinations and years are sorted out by Apple, among other things.

Don’t be afraid of Touch and Face ID

Ergo: So you have to be a bit more creative to protect your iPhone. Either way, a combination of a difficult-to-guess passcode plus Touch ID or Face ID is effective. The biometric data remain encrypted on the iPhone. Skeptical contemporaries do not have to be afraid that they will end up at Apple and should therefore not give up additional protection.
