It’s possible that Apple has given up on creating its own 5G modem

The Cupertino-based tech firm Apple relies on in-house processors for its mobile and other devices. However, the company needs to outsource the 5G modems to external suppliers. A previous report suggested that the company might choose Samsung to supply 5G modems. The company is currently getting the modems for its iPhones from Qualcomm. For quite some time now, the company has been working on an in-house 5G modem. However, a recent report indicates that the company has abandoned the development process completely.

Apple might cancel its 5G modem project

It was anticipated that the fourth-generation iPhone SE could debut with an in-house 5G modem. According to a rumor originating from Korea, Apple may abandon its plans to produce 5G modems as it is now reducing its investments in the modem development business. Well, if this information is correct, then the company will endure a major loss since it spent $1 billion in 2019 to acquire Intel’s modem business. In a huge deal, Apple bought the whole company and more than 2,000 employees who had previously worked at Intel on modems.

It is kind of strange why the company is struggling with the development of a 5G modem since it has been using in-house chipsets for years. The company is well-equipped with all technical and development experts. Besides this, the company acquired the modem business of Intel, which should have enabled it to develop its own 5G modem.

Probably Apple requires more time to work on several areas of integrating its own custom 5G modem with its products. It is kind of an acceptable reason that can be predicted. Perhaps we will get to know more about it in the future.
