Jump lists for the start menu and taskbar finally repaired

Microsoft has fixed a mistake that has impaired Jump lists in Windows 10 since February 2025. With an update, users could no longer access recently used files via the tiles in the start menu or in the taskbar.

Windows 10: Jump lists in the start menu again functional

Since the end of February 2025, many Windows 10 users have no longer been able to access their recently used files via the start menu or the taskbar, at least if they know and use these functions and noticed the bow. Specifically, the error concerned the so-called jump lists-a practical feature that shows the last open files when right-clicking on app tiles in the start menu or on taskbar icons.

The problem started with the optional update KB5052077 of February 25, 2025 and strengthened with the subsequent updates in March and April. Only Windows 10 Home and Pro Editions in version 22H2 were affected, while Windows 11 was spared from this bug.

Cause: New account management in the start menu

Loud Microsoft support (via Windows Latest) was caused by the integration of a new Microsoft account management in the start menu. This function, which originally comes from Windows 11, should enable users easier access to account management and was gradually introduced via a so -called “Controlled Feature Rollout” (CFR). The new account management can be found in the left sidebar of the start menu and enables a faster change between different Microsoft accounts. However, this integration unintentionally led to the jump-list functionality being impaired or damaged.

Automatic error correction

Microsoft recognized the problem early and rolled out a solution via a service patch on April 25, 2025. The group stopped the distribution of the incorrect update and withdrawn the changes to the start menu. Removal takes place automatically in the background without users having to become active themselves.

If you still have problems with the jump lists, the Microsoft support recommends ensuring that the respective device is connected to the Internet in order to obtain the automatic solution. After a restart, the problem should be fixed. Alternatively, users can also delete the “jumplistcache.dat” file in the “%Appdata%Microsoftwindowsrecentenzomatic Destinations” directory to manually reset the jump lists.
