Kodi 22: Latest work on the multimedia software

Since the final version of the multimedia software Kodi 21 was released in spring, things have been pretty quiet around the project. Now there is a lot of news, including the nightly development builds of Kodi 22 .

Working on Kodi 22

It has now been three months since the Kodi Foundation released Kodi 21 “Omega”, the long-awaited latest version of the popular home theater software, as the final version. As expected, the team took a well-deserved break after the release of the program. But work on the next version, Kodi 22, is of course already in full swing.

The traditional project name of the upcoming version would now have to start with the letter P – and many users may have expected the Kodi Foundation to choose something like “Pirate”.

After the last sci-fi-heavy names “Leia”, “Matrix”, “Nexus” and “Omega”, there is now an exception, and it has a rather sad background.

Normally, the Kodi team collects name suggestions from forums and team members, narrows them down to a shortlist and then selects a winner in an internal poll.

This time, however, everything was different. The suggestion to name Kodi 22 in honor of a fellow developer and team member who recently passed away at the age of just 37 was not discussed for long and so version 22 is now officially called Kodi 22 “Piers”. There is no timeline for the completion of Kodi 22 yet.

Speculation about release of test versions

However, the forum says that work on the first alpha version is progressing well – specifically, the status has been set at “79 percent completed” for the first release, which suggests that we may even receive the first version by the end of summer.
