Leak shows the end of an era: Apple is setting a new course with iOS 27

With iOS 27, which Apple will present at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 8th, the company is taking a course that relies less on spectacular innovations and more on solid foundations. A leak supports the rumors.

Stability instead of spectacle

The focus of iOS 27 is performance optimization and system stability. Comprehensive bug fixes are intended to minimize crashes, optimized code speeds up app launches and makes multitasking more fluid. The battery life should also be noticeably improved. But this strategy comes at a price. Apple draws a clear line under older devices: the entire iPhone 11 series and the second generation iPhone SE are no longer supported. Anyone who owns one of these models will be stuck with iOS 26. All affected devices use the A13 chip, which apparently no longer meets the requirements of the new AI-supported functions. What will come in detail has MacRumors now captured in a video:

Siri is growing up – thanks to Google

Perhaps the most dramatic change concerns Siri. The voice assistant is receiving a complete upgrade with the help of Google. As part of a cooperation, Apple is relying on Google’s Gemini technology to convert Siri into a fully-fledged AI agent.

The improvements are far-reaching: Siri becomes more context-aware, responds dynamically to individual needs and integrates more deeply into core apps such as Messages, Mail and Calendar. Instead of just reacting to simple commands, Siri should be able to carry out complex tasks over several steps. There is also a visual upgrade: a new user interface with Dynamic Island integration and a glowing cursor animation displays the “Search or Ask” prompt when Siri is activated. There is also a dedicated Siri app for iOS, iPadOS and macOS for the first time. With iOS 27, users can for the first time choose which AI platform they want to use. In addition to Gemini, options like Claude or other AI models from the App Store are available.

Photos app becomes a creative workshop

The Photos app also gets AI-powered features. Generative editing functions are intended to enable semi-professional results with minimal effort. The “Extend” function extends the edges of the image for more dynamic compositions, while “Enhance” automatically optimizes lighting, color balance and other parameters. With “Reframe” you can realign photos and position motifs as desired. Some of these features may be delayed due to development complexities.

Visual Intelligence: Scanning and Using the World

With iOS 27, Apple is sharpening the visual intelligence of its devices. The camera becomes a scanner that seamlessly mediates between the physical and digital worlds. Nutritional information on food can be scanned and transferred directly to the Health app. Phone numbers, addresses or appointments from printed materials can be extracted and automatically inserted into contacts or calendars. These functions are intended to simplify everyday life and save time.

5G from space: connectivity without limits

Apple is expanding satellite functions. Newer devices like the iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max and Ultra are getting support for 5G satellite internet. Apple Maps will also be available satellite-based for navigation in regions without network coverage. Photos and messages can also be sent to remote areas via satellite.

More control, more personalization

Apple is also making improvements in terms of customizability. A system-wide transparency slider allows you to adjust opacity levels throughout the interface. Undo and redo buttons make it easier to experiment with home screen layouts. Autocorrect gets smarter and suggests alternative words for a smoother typing experience.

Schedule is set

The roadmap for iOS 27 is clearly structured:

  • June 2026: Developer beta immediately after the WWDC keynote on June 8th
  • July 2026: Public beta for interested users
  • September 2026: Official release along with the iPhone 18 series
