Lenovo has officially released the ThinkPad X1 Fold 16, a highly anticipated folding laptop, over a year after its initial tease. This launch marks a significant milestone in the evolution of laptop design and functionality.
Jerry Paradise, Lenovo’s VP of Commercial Portfolio and Product Management, emphasized the company’s dedication to high standards of durability and usability. The ThinkPad X1 Fold 16 underwent extensive user testing, leading to several improvements. These enhancements include an improved fabric cover and reinforced reliability, ensuring the device meets the rigorous Mil Spec 810H testing standards.
The ThinkPad X1 Fold 16 stands out with its unique clamshell form factor, featuring a full-screen design without an internal keyboard. Users can invoke a virtual keyboard for a conventional laptop experience or use an external keyboard. The device offers versatility with its ability to transform into a tall portrait-oriented screen or a stretched landscape mode. The foldable laptop boasts a 16.3″ OLED touchscreen display, 2560 x 2024 resolution, 60Hz refresh rate, and 600 nits of brightness. It also includes integrated Intel Iris Xe graphics, a 5MP camera, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, and a USB-C 3.2 slot.
The ThinkPad X1 Fold 16 is available in four configurations. The base model, priced at $2,499, includes a Core i5-1230U CPU but lacks a Bluetooth keyboard or pen. Upgrading to higher models offers additional features like increased RAM and SSD storage, with the most expensive model priced at $3,899, featuring a vPro-enabled Core i7-1260U, 32GB of RAM, and a one-terabyte disk.
Since Lenovo first teased the ThinkPad X1 Fold 16, competitors like HP, LG, and ASUS have announced similar foldable laptops. However, Lenovo’s offering is competitively priced, with HP’s machine debuting at $4,999 and LG’s Gram Fold around $3,650 (exclusive to South Korea). The ASUS ZenBook Fold 17 starts at $3,499, making Lenovo’s foldable laptop a more accessible option in this emerging market segment.
Despite the slow delivery, Lenovo stands firm in its belief that the ThinkPad X1 Fold is a foldable laptop ready for businesses. The extensive durability testing and user feedback have been instrumental in shaping the future of innovative form factors in computing.
