LG monitors relieve gaming PCs with upscaling

The Korean electronics company LG has presented new gaming monitors in the run-up to CES 2026, all of which are in the upper class and feature 5K resolution and AI-supported upscaling. They should be able to reduce the load on gaming PCs because the content is scaled up from the screen.

LG is upgrading heavily

The new LG UltraGear Evo range of high-end monitors uses different display technologies, but all models have extremely high resolution and AI upscaling. The three flagship screens in the series offer 39, 27 and 52 inches respectively. The 39-inch LG UltraGear Evo 39GX950B is a curved ultrawide monitor in 21:9 format that offers a resolution of 5120×2160 pixels and uses an OLED panel. The display can be operated in its full resolution at up to 165 Hertz. If necessary, you can achieve a full 330 Hertz refresh rate with half the resolution.

The monitor now does upscaling

The LG 27GM950B uses new MiniLEDs that are said to be able to shine brighter than OLED panels without causing the so-called blooming that can occur with other MiniLED-lit screens. The maximum brightness is given here as a full 1250 candela. With 5K resolution, the display can work at 165 Hertz, while a full 330 Hertz is possible in QHD operation.

According to the manufacturer, the LG 52G930B is the largest gaming monitor with 5K2K resolution, as it is a curved panel that is as high as a normal 42-inch screen, but has a 12:9 format and is therefore significantly wider. Overall, the screen should be about a third wider. The display achieves a maximum refresh rate of 240 Hertz. The first two new monitors from LG offer so-called AI upscaling. The manufacturer promises that image content that is delivered in a lower resolution by the graphics card of the respective PC can be scaled up to the native resolution of the display without delay. This means that users theoretically need less GPU performance, but can still enjoy the content in high resolution, it is said.
