LPDDR5X DRAM with 8.5Gbps launched by Samsung

Yes, the fastest DRAM with a data transfer speed of 8.5Gbps has been launched.

LPDDR5X is a product of the evolution of LPDDR5. Reportedly, the DRAM chips are done with the validation as of today. The fastest data transfer speed of 8.5Gbps is the fastest speed for DRAM in the industry. Previously, a speed of 7.5Gbps was introduced in March. But now Samsung has easily surpassed and reached the new levels of 8.5Gbps.

LPDDR5X technology is not the latest technology. It has made its place in various smartphones. The new memory is expected to enable the achievement of high speeds with the least internal redesigning. Some unique features of LPDDR5X are:

  • low-power consumption
  • High-performance
  • Suitable for smartphones, automobiles, PCs, and servers

The new memory chips are made using the 14nm EUV process. Qualcomm Snapdragon Mobile platform is the first one that has already validated the use of the latest chips in its devices. These chips will be utilized in Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor. These processors will be used in high-end tablets and smartphones. In the future, these chips could also be a part of ultra-thin laptops.

A rapid expansion in the use of LPDDR5X DRAM chips was observed in the automobile sector. Where autonomous cars captured and processed quite a bit of data from sensors. In such a high computing space, DRAM could perform even better by lowering power consumption. Thus, resulting in lower costs.

The executive VP of the Memory Product Planning Team at Samsung Electronics, Daniel; Lee, said that LPDDR memory is well adapted. Since it has made its space in AI and data center applications apart from smartphones. He further added that a stronger tie and collaboration between SoC vendors and memory is the need of the hour. He further added that Samsung is looking forward to working with innovative platforms like Qualcomm. He said that Samsung will continue to improve future standards as expected by LPDDR.
