MacOS 12 Leaked With Code Names Monterey And Mammoth

A trademark registration from Apple may have already revealed the name of the upcoming macOS 12: The company has secured the titles “Monterey” and “Mammoth”. The first official information is expected for WWDC 2021.

This emerges from a new report by 9to5mac. Among other things, Apple has secured the rights for “Monterey” and “Mammoth”. Experts see a clear reference to the code names of the last macOS versions. Since 2013, versions of macOS have been named after special locations in California – Mavericks, Yosemite, El Capitan, Sierra, High Sierra, Mojave, Catalina, and Big Sur.

Also since 2013, there have been suitable trademark registrations in advance of Apple’s announcements, which let the names leak out in advance. Apple doesn’t make it that easy and only registers a name itself. The usual practice up to now has been that several registrations were made at the same time via letterbox companies. So the group has in the last few years the names “Diablo”, “Condor”, “Tiburon”, “Farallon”, “Miramar”, “Rincon”, “Pacific”, “Redwood”, “Shasta”, “Grizzly” “,” Skyline “and” Redtail “secured but never used.

Monterey And Mammoth

The registration for Mammoth was only renewed by Apple at the end of April this year. Mammoth Lakes is a ski area near the Sierra Mountains, not far from Yosemite. That would be a very appropriate name for a new version of macOS and fits perfectly with the previous naming style. Monterey was extended in December 2020. Monterey is geographically part of Big Sur, so it would be a legitimate successor.

However, Monterey was mentioned in an older keynote when Craig Federighi was planning a trip to Monterey and Big Sur during a demo of iPad multitasking. It is unclear whether this speaks for or against its use as a macOS version name. Apple will certainly release information on this in the coming week at WWDC 2021.
