Mark Zuckerberg’s megayacht Launchpad ignored calls for help off Alaska

Mark Zuckerberg’s $300 million superyacht ignored or allegedly did not hear a call for help from the Coast Guard off Alaska. A small boat drifted out to sea without fuel, and a cruise ship had to take over the rescue.

Incident off the coast of Alaska

On August 3, a small boat was left without fuel off the coast of Alaska. The US Coast Guard then issued a general radio call to request assistance from nearby ships. Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg’s 118-meter-long superyacht Launchpad was in the immediate vicinity of the stricken vessel, but did not respond to the authorities’ request. Eventually another ship took over the task. The cruise ship Wilderness Legacy towed the disabled boat to the safe harbor of Farragut Bay. The luxury yacht’s actions caused dissatisfaction among the cruise ship’s passengers after the captain informed them about the lack of reaction.

Neither Zuckerberg nor his family were on board the yacht at the time of the incident. The ship is estimated to be worth 300 million dollars (around 260 million euros). The Launchpad is equipped with modern technology and operates with a large crew in order to be able to navigate the ship safely at all times.

No legal obligation

Like the news agency AP reported, there was no acute distress at sea in the case. Since the boat was simply out of fuel, the Coast Guard did not consider the situation to be life-threatening. According to maritime law expert Ian Ralby, there was therefore no legal obligation for the Launchpad’s crew to intervene immediately.

According to international maritime law, mandatory action is only required if there is a direct danger to life and limb. A spokesman for Zuckerberg explained the incident that the crew did not hear the Coast Guard’s radio message in time because the radios on the command bridge were set to a different channel. When the crew finally registered the message from the coast guard, the cruise ship’s rescue operation was already in full swing. For this reason, the Launchpad crew refrained from further intervention and continued their regular journey.

Criticism of the radio discipline

Experts express factual doubts about the speaker’s presentation. In civil shipping, it is common practice to continuously listen to emergency channel 16. Modern ship radios have functions that automatically prioritize the channel. This also happens when the nautical crew communicates on other frequencies. Mutual aid is an important principle on the open sea, as weather conditions in regions such as Alaska can deteriorate extremely quickly. Simply remaining stranded can quickly become a real danger for the people on board due to strong winds or waves.
