MateBuds: Huawei Registers Trademark For True Wireless Headphones

Huawei is still the leader in the smartphone market and has surpassed Samsung in sales for the first time in the world. At the same time, the company is still actively preparing to release more new products, such as the Mate series of “family buckets” in the second half of this year-including smartphones, laptops, tablets, MateStation docking stations, Porsche co-branded smartwatches, and even true wireless headphones.

Dutch technology blog LetsGoDigital found that Huawei has filed MateBuds trademark applications in many places recently. In Apple AirPods and Samsung, led by Galaxy Buds, Huawei has also launched FreeBuds and Freelace true wireless headset product line. However, the latest trademark application indicates that the company plans to further expand the MateBuds product line.

Earlier this year, LetGoDigital also exposed the MatePod trademark submitted by Huawei. Perhaps considering that this name is easily confused with MatePad, the company resubmitted the MateBuds trademark application.

On April 7, 2020, Huawei filed a trademark application for MateBuds with the State Intellectual Property Office, and then on May 26, it filed an application with Korea (KIPO) and Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO).

In the trademark application, Huawei adopted the two styles of “MateBuds” and “Mate Buds” respectively. Subsequently, Huawei filed the same trademark application in Madrid, Spain.

On July 4, 2020, the relevant application was officially accepted by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) database. If all goes well, MateBuds may appear together with the Mate 40 series smartphones in a few months.

Huawei’s Mate 40 series could probably be the last Mate device with Kirin Chip, as the company is forced to end cooperation with TSMC which coproduced Kirin Chips.
