MediaTek announces first TV chip with Dolby Vision IQ support

MediaTek has announced its intention to offer the first commercial SoC with support for Dolby Vision IQ with Precision Detail. The processor should be found in upcoming TV models. Dolby Vision IQ would provide significantly better picture quality. As the manufacturer recently announced the MediaTek Pentanic series for 4K and 8K televisions is said to support Dolby Vision IQ technology.

This is a playback technology for HDR movies. The picture settings are automatically adjusted to the viewer’s environment without the viewer having to change the settings of the device. The Precision Detail feature ensures that details can be displayed much better in both light and dark rooms.

The gameplay rendering has been improved

In addition, the MediaTek Pentanic series should also improve the gameplay content displayed on the TV sets. The processors include support for features introduced in connection with Dolby Vision. This gives TV manufacturers the opportunity to offer their customers gaming with Dolby Vision in 4K resolution and with a refresh rate of 120 Hertz. In addition, the MediaTek chips should reduce latency using Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) and a variable refresh rate (VRR). It is currently unclear which TV manufacturers will use the new MediaTek chips.

The first devices with the new chips from the Pentatonic series will probably come from manufacturers such as Xiaomi and Sony and will be shown in the course of the year. The first MediaTek processors to support Dolby Vision IQ with Precision Detail should be available in the second half of the current year.
