MediaTek ranked at the top in selling its smartphone chipsets in 2020

Samsung has been manufacturing its Galaxy smartphones and tablets from Qualcomm, MediaTek, and its own semiconductor design arm. The company has lately been involved with Taiwanese firm MediaTek in using its chipsets for manufacturing its devices, helping the company become the world’s biggest smartphone chipset vendor.

According to a new report, MediaTek has outranked Qualcomm to become the world’s biggest smartphone chipset vendor. In 2020, the company shipped around 351.8 million units, witnessing 47.8% growth compared to the previous year when it shipped 238 million processors.

In 2020, Samsung was the top buyer of the company’s chipsets buying 43.3 million smartphone processors, a whopping 254.5% year-on-year growth. Previously, Xiaomi was MediaTek’s biggest buyer, buying nearly 63.7 million processors in 2019.

Ever since the trade ban was placed on Huawei, many have started using MediaTek chips.

On the other hand, Samsung is also struggling to promote its semiconductor design business. The company has been involved in manufacturing its Exynos processors. Last year, the company supplied a series of chipsets to Vivo. It is also said that Samsung is in talks with Xiaomi and OPPO, but no order has been placed from these two smartphone manufacturers.
