MediaTek teams up with Nvidia to provide automotive chips

According to some recent pieces of information, MediaTek and Nvidia have joined hands for the development of new automotive chips. Reportedly, the two companies will manufacture four new automotive chips for self-driving cars. Samsung and Qualcomm’s automotive semiconductors will face competition from the company’s Dimensity Auto Cockpit series chips.

According to details, the Dimensity Auto Cockpot series comprises of four chips. These include CM-1, CV-1, CX-1, and CY-1. They are built on a 3nm process that uses Nvidia’s RTX GPU and ARM’s V9-A CPU cores. These chips have support for Nvidia’s DRIVE OS. It will fuel the infotainment system of connected cars. These processors’ AI processing is powered by Nvidia technology and will be utilized for general information needs, entertainment, and navigation.

The chips’ GPU can power four high-resolution screens. According to MediaTek and Nvidia, the new chips come with support for ray-traced graphics. From this perspective, they can even support in-vehicle gaming. They can also support media streaming and audio/video calls. For natural controls and a gaze-aware user interface, they can even monitor occupants in the vehicle.

Of these four chips, the CV-1 is a chip for entry-level cars, the CM-1 is a chip tailored for mid-range cars and the CY-1 is for high-end cars. The CX-1 is reserved for premium car offerings. These processors can run various operating systems in virtualization at the same time, such as QNX, Linux, and Android Auto.

For assisted driving, these chips have ten cameras and other sensors. Other connectivity features include NTN (for direct satellite connectivity for emergency calls and messages), Wi-Fi 7, GNSS, Bluetooth, and a built-in 5G modem (sub-6GHz). HDR scenes can be processed in real-time with the help of built-in ISP.
