Mediatek wants to have the first 2NM chips produced from September

The Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer Mediatek announced on Tuesday as part of the Computex Forum in Taipei to have a new chip with a structural width of only 2 nanometers manufactured at TSMC from September 2025.

Tape-out goal is

The so-called “tape-out”, which you want to achieve on this appointment, marks a decisive milestone in the development process of a microchip and heralds the production preparation. Up to a real mass production, however, time goes by, in which small series are first produced for test and voting purposes.

In order to meet the increasing complexity of modern system-on-chip designs (SOCs), MediaTek claims to use advanced, AI-based development tools. This is how you work with the specialist Cadence and use its development witness Virtuoso Studio and Specter X Simulator – operated on the Super Computing platforms from NVIDIA.

This combination enables a simulation performance up to six times faster and a total of 30 percent increased productivity in chip development, it said. “Our work on 2NM technology requires high-performance and reliable tools,” said Mediatek manager Ching San Wu on the Computex. “Thanks to the close cooperation with Cadence, we were able to introduce automation functions that make our design process considerably more efficient and significantly shorten the market launch time.”

Big jump

The planned 2NM technology marks the next technological jump in chip wear. Thanks to close partnerships with industry leaders such as Cadence and Nvidia, Mediatek can now position themselves at the top. Much earlier, competitors such as Qualcomm will not get into the 2NM area. TSMC will start the mass production of 2NM chips this year. It is likely to be exciting how the manufacturing capacities that are still quite limited will be distributed. It is clear that a good part of Apple is taken into account, other customers have to hire themselves in line.
