Meetings against unionization are being held by Apple in each US location

Employees’ unions are generally discouraged by large companies and businesses. Since they act as a collective negotiating unit that can bargain for better pay, benefits, and working conditions for the workers. In order to prevent its employees from unionizing Apple has begun conducting meetings at each of its about 270 stores across the United States to “discuss the risks of unionization” with employees.

Managers criticized union dues, the unionization procedure, and the collection of authorization cards at these sessions by using the first unionized Apple shop in Towson, Maryland as an example. Well, this is not the first time that Apple has taken measures to discourage such approaches. In 2022, Apple was found guilty of violating federal law by the National Labor Relations Board agency. The company was accused of preventing its workers at its Cumberland Mall store in Atlanta from unionizing. It was a breach of the National Labor Relations Act.

According to NLRB General Counsel Jennifer Abruzzo, forcing employees to attend captive audience meetings under the prospect of discipline deters employees from exercising their right to refuse to hear this speech. This is in violation of the NLRA.

Advantages of unionization for companies

Sometimes the advantages of unionization are overlooked by the disadvantages. On one side such unionizations can create problems and disruptions within the organization. However, on the other hand, they can help boost productivity. Since the negotiations for wages and better working conditions will improve the overall work environment and in turn benefit the company.

In addition to this, sometimes unions help to resolve disputes between the higher authorities and workers. Such practices prove to be cost and time-effective since they eliminate the likelihood of legal consequences. Besides this, do note that unionization is a right of the workers. Many countries protect it by laws and regulations, including the US. The companies that prevent their employees from unionizing disobey the labor laws.
