Meta Teams Up with Oakley for High-End Smart Glasses: ‘Supernova 2’ and ‘Hypernova’

Meta is ramping up its wearable tech game with a new focus on augmented reality (AR) and fitness-oriented devices. The tech giant is reportedly working on a lineup of cutting-edge smart glasses, including Oakley-branded models designed specifically for athletes. These glasses, dubbed ‘Supernova 2’ and ‘Hypernova,’ come packed with high-end features, aiming to redefine wearable AR technology.

Oakley-Branded Smart Glasses for Athletes

Meta’s collaboration with Oakley marks an exciting step into the fitness market. According to Bloomberg tech reporter Mark Gurman, the ‘Supernova 2’ model will feature Oakley’s signature Sphaera design, combining functionality with a sleek aesthetic. Cameras will be positioned near the center of the frame for enhanced usability, particularly for athletes who may want to record activities or use the glasses as dashcams during cycling sessions.

Meta’s partnership with Luxottica Group SA, the parent company of Oakley and Ray-Ban, has proven fruitful in the past. The Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses have already gained traction in the stylish eyewear market, and now, with this collaboration, Meta is targeting the athletic and fitness crowd.

The ‘Hypernova’ Model Brings AR to the Next Level

In addition to the Supernova 2, Meta is reportedly developing another advanced model called ‘Hypernova.’ This pair of glasses will include a display embedded in the right lens, capable of projecting notifications, apps, and other information directly into the user’s field of view. To enhance functionality, Hypernova will come with a wrist strap controller, called ‘Ceres,’ allowing users to seamlessly interact with the device.

This combination of AR and AI technology has the potential to revolutionize how athletes and fitness enthusiasts interact with their environment. Whether it’s receiving live updates during a workout or tracking performance stats in real time, these glasses are designed to integrate seamlessly into an active lifestyle.

The Cost of Innovation: Expensive but Feature-Packed

As exciting as these advancements sound, owning a pair of these high-tech glasses won’t come cheap. Bloomberg reports that Meta is facing challenges in balancing cost, functionality, and consumer demand. As a result, these glasses are expected to cost upwards of $1,000.

Meta isn’t the only company in the AR glasses race, either. Other tech giants, like Apple, are reportedly exploring smart glasses, but they lack the strong sportswear brand recognition that Oakley brings to the table. Apple’s rumored push into AR glasses, however, could create stiff competition for Meta’s offerings.

Meta’s AR Vision Expands

Meta is expanding its AR portfolio beyond just smart glasses. The company is also working on a range of wearable tech, including earbuds with cameras and smartwatches. This push underscores Meta’s commitment to AR’s future and its potential to change how we interact with the world.

Until competitors like Apple catch up, Meta appears to be leading the charge in AR smart glasses, particularly with its Oakley collaboration. But one question remains: how will the public react to athletes and cyclists wielding Neo-like tech straight out of The Matrix?

Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses: The Predecessor

Meta’s success with its Ray-Ban collaboration highlights its ability to blend technology with fashion. The Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses feature a 12MP Ultra-wide camera capable of capturing high-resolution images (4032×3024) and recording videos up to 60 seconds. They can even livestream directly to Facebook or Instagram. Available in multiple styles, colors, and with prescription lenses, these glasses cater to individuals who want to capture and share moments on the go.
