Meta Unveils CapCut Rival ‘Edits’ Amid TikTok Turbulence

Meta is stepping up its game by launching a new video editing app called Edits, designed to compete directly with TikTok’s popular tool, CapCut. Announced by Instagram chief Adam Mosseri, the app aims to empower content creators with advanced editing capabilities while addressing gaps in Meta’s creator ecosystem.
What Sets Edits Apart?
Edits offers more than just basic video editing; it brings a robust suite of tools for creators. The app includes a dedicated tab for creative inspiration and another for saving early drafts. Users can share their drafts with friends to gather feedback before finalizing their content, which sets it apart from many other tools in the market. Once a video is published, Edits provides performance insights to help creators refine their strategies.
Available on both Android and iOS, iPhone users can already pre-order the free app via the App Store, with full public access expected next month. Currently, Meta is testing the app with a limited group of users to fine-tune its features based on real-world feedback.
Timing Amid TikTok Uncertainty
The launch of Edits coincides with TikTok’s ongoing challenges in the U.S. market. After being temporarily banned due to legislative action during President Biden’s administration, TikTok saw its operations threatened with demands to sell its U.S. arm. ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, initially chose to pull the app from stores. However, the situation changed when former President Trump promised an executive order allowing TikTok to operate again. This back-and-forth underscores the uncertain competitive landscape that Meta is navigating.

While Meta is clearly aiming to capitalize on TikTok’s precarious situation, the company’s relationship with creators has room for improvement. Many have voiced concerns about underpayment and content visibility issues on Meta’s platforms compared to TikTok. Some creators even claim censorship and significant hurdles in gaining reach on Instagram and Facebook.
If Meta wants Edits to be a serious competitor, it must address these frustrations.
