Metal smartphone with lots of storage for little money

The Oppo subsidiary OnePlus is now launching the OnePlus Nord 4, a smartphone whose design, with its large metal casing, would probably be more reminiscent of the 2010s. But that is precisely what makes it so appealing. OnePlus

OnePlus brings back design concept

The OnePlus Nord 4 wants to impress above all with its design. The device has a casing in which not only the frame but also most of the back is made of metal. Anyone who owns a Google Pixel 2 will probably be strongly reminded of the former flagship smartphone. In addition to the gray model, OnePlus is also planning versions with a silver, hatched design and a kind of color gradient from green to silver gray.

On the front we are dealing with a 6.74 inch (17.12 cm) AMOLED display that has a very high resolution of 2772 x 1240 pixels and can work with a refresh rate of up to 120 Hertz and a maximum brightness of up to 1100 candelas if required. The panel covers around 93.5 percent of the front of the Nord 4 and, as far as can be seen in the first promo images, is completely flat.

Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 from Qualcomm on board

Under the hood is the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3, a SoC with an octa-core CPU and a Qualcomm Adreno 732 GPU that can run at up to 2.8 gigahertz. Together with 12 or 16 gigabytes of RAM and 256 (UFS 3.1) or 512 gigabytes (UFS 4.0) of flash memory, the hardware base is certainly impressive. The cameras are a combination of a Sony LYT-600 main sensor with 50 megapixels, which should ensure good photos using phase detection autofocus and hardware image stabilizer with an F/1.8 aperture. There is also an eight-megapixel Sony IMX355 camera sensor, which is used for ultra-wide-angle shots. Surprisingly, OnePlus has dispensed with the pointless macro cameras of other smartphones. On the front is a 16-megapixel camera with an F/2.4 aperture.

The 5500mAh battery can be quickly charged using a 100-watt power adapter thanks to OnePlus’ SuperVOOC technology. There are also two stereo speakers, support for Bluetooth 5.4 and NFC as well as WiFi 6. The fingerprint reader is located under the display surface. There are two dual SIM slots in nano format and 5G support.

The operating system on the OnePlus Nord 4 is Android 14. Although it is a kind of mid-range smartphone, OnePlus wants to deliver new versions of Android for the device over the next four years. New software updates regarding security, however, are to be offered over six years. Basically, the device will receive longer support than the brand’s current flagship smartphones. The basic version of the OnePlus Nord 4 costs 499 euros and includes 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of UFS 3.1 flash memory. For 599 euros you get the version with 16 GB RAM and 512 GB of faster UFS 4.0 storage. There could be some kind of special offer at launch where the device is offered for 549 euros.
