Strong passwords are difficult to manage without a password manager. Microsoft is now providing its own offer. As announced by the company, the Authenticator App will be expanded to include password management and auto-fill functions.
Probably the first and most important piece of advice for the secure handling of access data is clear: assign complex and unique passwords. Given the abundance of services that logins require, the secure management of this sensitive content is difficult to achieve without the right software. More and more providers are offering password managers, and now Microsoft is also delivering a corresponding multi-platform solution here – after it had already been tested on iOS in recent months.
As the company announced in a blog entry, comprehensive password manager functions have been built into the Microsoft Authenticator app, which is available for iOS and Android . However, the group is making a restriction here at the start: The application requires a Microsoft account, currently work and school accounts based on Azure are still excluded from use.
In its function, Microsoft’s password manager then does the usual: The application can save existing access data for websites and apps or suggest strong passwords. All stored data on smartphones is secured by two-way authentication. The synchronization between Mobile and Microsoft Edge as well as a new Chrome extension is also successful.
In order to be able to use the new functions, settings must be made in the latest version of the Microsoft Authenticator. The corresponding entry can be found under Settings – Beta – Autofill. Once activated, the new Passwords tab is available. You must then log in with a Microsoft account.
