Microsoft Delays Windows 10 Updates Amid Coronavirus

Due to the current health situation, Microsoft announces to delay all optional updates for Windows 10, Windows 8.1 and server versions from May 2020. These are non-security updates outside of the traditional patch day.

The update pause for the Edge browser and delays in the production of the Flight Simulator 2020 has already proven that Microsoft’s software developments are also influenced by the coronavirus. The COVID-19 pandemic is now also affecting the Windows sector. As the company announced via its in-house message center, from May 2020 onwards, so-called C and D updates for the operating systems Windows 10, Windows 8.1 and Windows Server up to version 2008 SP2 will be dispensed with.

Microsoft Releases New Updates In Preview Ring Insider Program

In the coming weeks and months, the focus will only be on security-related updates instead of optional updates. The classic Windows Patch day (B updates), which takes place every second Tuesday of the month, remains unaffected by these restrictions. It remains to be seen whether the continuing coronavirus will also have a negative impact on the next Windows 10 feature update (version 2004), which is currently expected to be released in spring 2020.

The upcoming optional Windows C and D updates

Microsoft did not comment on the issue in the official announcement: “We have assessed the public health situation and we know that it will affect our customers. In response to these challenges, we will focus primarily on security updates. As of May In 2020, we will stop all optional, non-security releases (C and D updates) for all supported versions of Windows client and server products (Windows 10, version 1909 down to Windows Server 2008 SP2). ”
