Microsoft delivers latest update for the Surface Duo 2
After the embarrassment surrounding the takeover of Nokia, Microsoft is now burying its last smartphone for the time being. The very last security update for the Surface Duo 2 has now been released. This ends support for the once ambitious dual-screen device.
A single OS upgrade in three years
When the Microsoft Surface Duo 2 came onto the market in October 2021, the ambitions were still great: the Redmond company wanted to offer a really productive hybrid device consisting of a smartphone and tablet, with its own Android variant including a heavily customized launcher of the first generation model wanted to clear up. Almost three years later, the Surface Duo 2 is also dead.
Last year, Microsoft ended support for the first Surface Duo, which was launched in 2019, without much fanfare. Ultimately, the second model was kept alive for even less time than its predecessor. After launching with Android 11, the Surface Duo 2 was only updated once with an OS upgrade in the form of Android 12L – after that too took ages to arrive.
One last patch before support ends on October 21st
On today’s monthly patch day from Microsoft, the final security update for the Surface Duo 2 was released, which finally ends support. The official end of support date is October 21, 2024, after which no further security updates are expected for the device.
The Surface Duo 2 will not receive a successor either, although there have long been rumors that Microsoft was working on a third-generation model with a large folding display. After the Surface team was trimmed last year as part of mass layoffs, the corresponding plans are now history, just like the Surface Duo 2.
From ambitious ideas to the rest ramp
Like its predecessor, the Surface Duo 2 offered a number of innovative ideas, especially for power users, especially when it comes to using multiple apps at the same time. However, it came onto the market at a time when Samsung & Co had already introduced several generations of their foldable smartphones with large foldable OLED screens.
If you are completely pain-free and want to own a dual-screen smartphone tablet that is no longer supported and has been ignored throughout its life cycle in the typical Microsoft way, the Surface Duo 2 is surprisingly still available according to the WinFuture price comparison Always purchase from individual dealers in new condition.
The enormous prices no longer fully correspond to the desolate state of Microsoft’s commitment to mobile devices.
