Microsoft fixes Outlook crashes, but a serious bug remains

Microsoft is struggling with persistent problems in its Office applications. Users are reporting crashes and error messages, with Outlook being particularly affected. The company is looking for the causes and is working on a solution.

Trouble in the Microsoft Office universe

Microsoft 365 users are currently faced with a number of problems that can make everyday work considerably more difficult. As the IT expert Günter Born reports in his blog reports of crashes and error messages in popular Office applications such as Outlook, Word and OneNote are increasing.

Outlook users in conflict with msls70.dll

Another persistent problem affects Outlook users who are repeatedly confronted with an error message regarding a missing file called “msls70.dll”. According to Born, this Problem first appeared in mid-August 2024 and seems to have been occurring in waves since then. One affected administrator reports: “The problem disappears for a few days after updates, but then reappears after a week.”

After the rollout of Microsoft 365 version 2407 build 17830.20138 and later builds, another serious issue emerged. Users reported crashes in Outlook, Word, and OneNote while typing or performing tasks such as spell checking.

Microsoft in problem-solving mode

The Redmond-based company has recognized the problem and is actively investigating it. In a statement updated almost two weeks ago, Support post. Microsoft has already confirmed the error and says that the Outlook team is working on it. A permanent solution is still pending. As an interim solution, Microsoft recommends that those affected temporarily switch to the new Outlook app or web-based access (OWA). Born is critical of this recommendation: “An absolute no-go in many areas,” he comments on the company’s suggestions.

Problem identified?

According to Microsoft, the cause of these crashes is incompatible versions between the Microsoft Office 2016 proofing tools and the Office language packs of the Microsoft 365 apps for enterprises.

The developers suspect that the incompatible versions of the spelling tools are part of the installation remnants of previous Office versions that are left behind in the system when the Microsoft 365 apps are installed. Günter Born

Solutions and outlook

Microsoft has already rolled out fixes for these issues in various channels. For the current channel, the solution is expected to be made available on September 24, 2024 with version 2409 (Build 18025.20000).

For systems that have not yet been updated to the latest builds, Microsoft recommends an online repair of Microsoft Office. In some cases, reinstalling the language packs may also be necessary.
