Microsoft HoloLens is all set to take the world by storm as it is due to be made available to developers by next year. Its first untethered device that supports holographic computing with ground-breaking augmented reality features, the HoloLens looks all set to change the way its users look at the world.
Introducing the HoloLens:
Compact, sleek, and lightweight, the HoloLens device uses ground-breaking gesture-based virtual input techniques to turn the user’s world into a virtual canvas, where one can literally weave magic out of thin air. It will strive to bridge communication gaps by allowing individuals to communicate at levels never experienced before. Visualizations will no longer remain a figment of one’s imagination. Anything that is rendered can now be visualized as though it were a tangible physical object. This is the power of holographic technology. All this is based on Microsoft’s latest flagship operating system: Windows 10, the first operating systemthat provides support for holographic technology.
Virtual meets reality:
The HoloLens combines brings out the digital world in an interactive virtual realm that is superimposed above the real world. This is only the broad definition of a fragment of what the HoloLens is capable of doing. As a small example, a user who wishes to create an Arduino-powered drone will be able to create the schematic of the body of the drone and project it onto a work-in-progress version of the hardware.
State-of-the-art ergonomic design:
The HoloLens includes a passive cooling mechanism, no external wiring to get in the way, and a chassis that allows the device to perch with perfect precision and balance over the head of its wearer. Under the hood, it includes advanced sensors and multi-dimensional projection lenses that, along with the advanced HPU (holographic processing unit) work to bring the incredible into reality. In short, this is where ergonomics meets holographic computing to teleport the wearer decades into the future.
Organizations already using HoloLens:
It is to be noted here that even though things have started moving for the HoloLens at long last, several organizations are already aware of and using this technology by Microsoft. For example, NASA had decided to try the HoloLens on the International Space Station earlier in 2015. However, owing to a catastrophe shortly after the launch of the rocket that was carrying the hardware, the experiment could not be conducted in deep space, as planned initially. Early instances of testing the HoloLens have been performed in attempts to use the technology in order to teach anatomy. Technology giants like Autodesk and Dassault Systems are also working towards implementing the technology.
HoloLens research grant from Microsoft:
To encourage further research in what seems to be the first glimpse of a future that combines real and virtual, Microsoft has announced a research program, proposing grants worth $1,00,000 and development kits for HoloLens. The five winning proposals are due to be announced in the first fortnight of October, 2015. Through this campaign, Microsoft has made its message clear – the HoloLens is a technology that is here to stay.
