Just because the latest Surface models are smaller, they are not cheaper. Despite some cuts in terms of CPU performance, display and battery, the new 12- or 13-inch variants of the Surface Pro and Surface Laptop are only 100 and 200 euros cheaper than the cheapest version of the Surface Pro 12 and the Surface Laptop 7. With some certainty, the Redmonders with the devices basically target the iPad Air and the MacBook Air, with which Apple has been using a slightly lower price in its portfolio for some time. It should be noted that the expandability ceases to exist here, since all memory is firmly soldered.
Bucket design with more curves, slimmed down hardware
It is particularly striking that Microsoft with the latest models for the first time in years has really put a hand on the design of the surface tablet and the surface laptop, after all, the new devices come with a round-designed housing. In addition, you even do without an enclosed power supply, since the new versions should only be loaded via USB Power Delivery.
Every 27 to 40 watt USB power supply should be sufficient. Compared to the “normal” model, the Surface Pro with 12 -inch display offers one advantage: it offers the option to attach the Surface Slim Pen on the back using a magnetic. Apart from that, both models are based on the eight-core and up to 3.4 gigahertz fast Qualcomm Snapdragon X1P-42-100 and are always equipped with 16 gigabytes of RAM-there is simply no 32 GB option. The internal flash memory is 256 or 512 gigabytes.
Display shrinks slightly, resolution strong
The Surface Pro with 12 inches offers a resolution of 2196×1464 pixels. The screen is an LCD, so Microsoft does not use the optional OLED panel on the larger 13-inch model. The maximum refresh rate is given as 90 Hertz and of course the new 12-inch model also supports the Surface Pen for drawings and handwriting. The Surface Pro with a 12-inch screen offers WiFi 7 and has two USB-C ports, which are only USB-3.2 compatible.
One of them is also used for energy supply. The German entry price is 979 euros. Microsoft demands a sporty 120 euros for the doubling of the internal memory, so that the output costs 1099 euros with 512 GB. For just under 60 euros you can also order a suitable 45 watt power supply. You also have to pay extra for the Surface Type cover and the Surface (Slim) PEN.
The Surface Laptop also slim off with 13 inches
The Surface Laptop with a 13-inch screen has a resolution of “only” 1920×1280 pixels and also uses a pixel sensual display with touchscreen. The maximum refresh rate here is only 60 Hertz. According to Microsoft, each of the LCD installed in the devices is individually calibrated. The screen should be able to reach a typical maximum brightness of up to 400 candela.
In the new basic model of the Surface laptops, Microsoft advertises, among other things, with the longest battery life in its portfolio. The device should offer a total of 23 hours of running time for local video playback and up to 16 hours with active internet use via WLAN. Unfortunately, the group has not yet made a precise information about the battery capacity. Unlike the other Surface models before, the Surface Connect connection is eliminated in the two newcomers, so there is only the USB-C ports for charging.
With its new notebook, Microsoft also integrates a USB A port of full size, through which older peripheral devices can be connected on request. The Surface Laptop with a 13-inch display costs at least 1099 euros in Germany and is therefore only 100 euros cheaper than the cheapest larger model. Here, too, 120 euros are due for the version with 512 gigabytes of large UFS flash memory. Microsoft wants to deliver the two new Surface models from June from June, but now offers it to pre-order. Of course, they run as a operating system with Windows 11.
