Microsoft Restructures Windows Division to Focus on Next-Gen AI Integration

Microsoft reorganizes the development departments of its Windows operating system. These should now work together again. This ends a long-term separation between core and feature areas that existed since 2018.

Everything for the new Ki-Windows

In an internal memo, Pavan Davuluri, head of the Windows and Surface Group Savings, announced that the teams who work at the core of Windows will return to the Windows organization. This reported by the US magazine The verge to which the letter is present. A few years ago, Microsoft divided Windows development: the engineers who were responsible for the basic system components were assigned to the Azure cloud area, while the teams that deal with user interfaces and functions remained in Windows. Now, like Windows Client and Windows server, they should work together again under an organizational roof. “This change combines Windows development in an organization and allows us to implement our priorities more consistently,” wrote Davuluri.

The step falls into a phase in which Microsoft increasingly relies on artificial intelligence. CEO Satya Nadella had already announced that the future of Windows should be “agent”: The operating system should not only support classic input methods such as mouse and keyboard, but also voice commands and AI functions that can take on tasks independently. Davuluri emphasized that the reorganization helps to implement the vision of Windows as “Agentic OS”.

Kernel and Co. stay

However, some specialized teams remain with Azure. These include the developers of the Windows kernel, virtualization and Linux integration (WSL). These groups should continue to provide basic technologies that are important for the operation of Windows on different devices and processor architectures.

With the now bundled responsibility for the majority of Windows development, it is indicated that Microsoft is preparing the next big step for his operating system. At a time when AI is becoming increasingly important, the company Windows would like to position as a platform for the future. Industry observers therefore see a signal in the reorganization that Microsoft wants to drive the integration of AI even more and thus redefine Windows in the long term.
