It may not be the first time in gaming history that a controller has smelled like pizza, but for now, it’s fully intentional and not a result of eating while gaming. In any case, Microsoft has now created the world’s first “pizza controller”.
Because the Redmond-based manufacturer has presented the first ” Xbox controller that smells like pizza” in a blog post. However, this is not meant to be taken seriously, because it is a very funny marketing campaign for the start of the film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT): Mutant Mayhem. Coming to theaters in August, users can already win one of these Xbox gamepads by following the Xbox Game Pass account on Twitter or X and retweeting the related post.
Information on the controller itself can also be found in a post on the official Xbox page. There you can also read that there are actually four different versions of TMNT: “The controller is available in four variants, each representing the characteristic colors, weapons, and personality of a Turtle brother: Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo.”
You can’t buy these controllers, but if you’re in New York these days, you can try them out or “sniff” them yourself on August 2 between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the Microsoft Experience Center on Fifth Avenue. Then you can also convince yourself how the pizza smell actually is.
Incidentally, the pizza smell is provided by a built-in fragrance atomizer, which has the shape of a piece of New York pizza. A new game will not be released on the occasion of the cinema film, which is also the reason why Microsoft refers to an older game in its blog post, namely Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge, which was released a year ago.
