Microsoft Silent as Trump Administration Uses Halo to Recruit for ICE, Comparing Migrants to Aliens

The Trump administration is using Halo images to create recruitment memes for the immigration agency ICE, comparing migrants to in-game parasitic aliens. Microsoft has so far remained silent about the controversial and tasteless use of its trademarks.
Government misuses gaming icons for politics
The Trump administration has once again used gaming content to fuel its political messaging, putting the popular Halo franchise at the center of a controversy. After a Pokémon video from the immigration agency ICE, the Department of Homeland Security is now using images from the Microsoft shooter series for recruiting purposes. The controversial posting shows Halo characters on a Warthog vehicle with the text “Destroy the Flood” – a reference to the parasitic alien species from the game and of course also an allusion to the alleged “flood of illegal migrants” in the USA.
The image contains a direct link to the ICE recruiting website and is captioned “Finishing this fight,” a reference to Master Chief’s iconic line from Halo 2. The parallel between the fictional Flood parasites and real migrants is undoubtedly intentional and has been described by critics as dehumanizing rhetoric. Like gaming magazine Polygon reported, the action arose from a social media exchange between the Trump administration and the gaming retailer GameStop. The trigger was the recent announcement of Halo: Campaign Evolved, a remake of the original Halo game that will also be released for the first time on PlayStation 5 in 2026.
Meme battle with GameStop
GameStop posted a statement about the “end of the console wars,” to which the White House responded with an AI-generated image of Trump as Master Chief. The situation escalated when the Department of Homeland Security followed suit with the ICE recruiting mail.
Microsoft is silent
Despite the controversial use of its trademark rights, Microsoft has not yet issued a statement. When asked, a spokesperson simply said the company had “nothing to share on this matter.” The behavior is reminiscent of Nintendo, which typically responds quickly to copyright infringement, but remained silent when the Department of Homeland Security used Pokémon in immigration raids. The gaming community reacts to the political instrumentalization with criticism. In Halo forums, the use of the trademark is described as problematic. Discussion of the posts has even been banned in the official Halo Discord, while the fan-run Halo subreddit explicitly allows discussion.
Questionable social media strategy
The Department of Homeland Security is increasingly relying on social media campaigns to recruit personnel. ICE has previously used a Pokémon video with the slogan “Gotta Catch ‘Em All” for immigration raids. This strategy follows a trend toward populist social media content that aims to simplify complex political issues through gaming and pop culture references.
