Microsoft Store loses Instant Games
Microsoft is withdrawing a short test run: the instant games in the Microsoft Store will be switched off. The well-known principle has been in effect again since November 14, 2024 – games must first be downloaded before they can be played.
Short pleasure in the Microsoft Store
Microsoft has decided to discontinue a feature in the Microsoft Store that was only introduced at the beginning of the year. The so-called “Arcade Instant Games”, which allowed users to play games directly in the store without prior download, will no longer be available from now on.
There is currently no real explanation as to why. The instant games belonged to the arcade category in the Microsoft Store and were intended to spice up the shopping experience. The idea: Users can dive straight into short, fun games without the hassle of waiting for downloads or installations – fast, uncomplicated and entertaining.
How Windows Latest reports Microsoft has already started informing users about the end of the function. A notice will now appear in the Arcade section of the store that says:
As of November 14th, Arcade will be removed from the Microsoft Store. You will still be able to download your games, but Instant Play will no longer be available. Microsoft Store Notice
Reasons for the quick exit
Also Dr. Windows deals with the end. The short lifespan of instant games raises questions. Microsoft had partnered with several developers to provide a wide range of titles for the instant games. But apparently there was no great success. When the feature was discontinued, there were around 69 games available in the arcade category – many of them with gameplay that was very reminiscent of well-known mobile games like Angry Birds.
Alternatives
For most Windows users, switching off instant games shouldn’t have a major impact. If you want to continue using the games, you can download and install them from the Microsoft Store as usual. The only difference is that it will no longer be possible to play immediately without downloading first. The concept of instant games was reminiscent of the previously widespread Flash games, which could also be played directly in the browser.
Although the quality of these games often couldn’t compete with full-fledged PC titles, they offered entertaining entertainment and were therefore quite popular.
