Microsoft has announced a new Surface Laptop specially designed for schoolchildren and use in the classroom and for (online) learning. The device will initially only be available in the USA – but the idea behind it is extremely interesting.
Microsoft today announced a new initiative for education. It is not just a device or a service, but a complete all-around package, a real initiative because the group has put a lot of work into this project, but certainly cannot expect any big profits at first. The principle of the new “SE” series is based on slimmed-down hardware, a slimmed-down Windows 11, and suitable apps for students. The whole thing comes at a real competitive price because Microsoft is only asking $249 for the new Surface Laptop SE.
It was recently leaked that the company is planning a cheap Surface laptop for schoolchildren. Now the “Reimagine Event” gave an insight into what Surface Laptop SE and Windows 11 SE can do. Windows 11 SE is designed for students of various grades up to the age of 14 years. There are accordingly child-friendly tools and learning aids, including for improved reading comprehension.
Microsoft is also making it easy to manage computers in schools with a tool called Autopilot. All tools on the devices were designed so that they can also be used offline – according to Microsoft, more than 16 million students of the age groups in the USA have no or only very limited internet access outside of school. Therefore, the Microsoft Office applications were designed to work offline as part of the Microsoft 365 license.
The files are stored offline in OneDrive until they are reconnected to the internet. At this point, Windows 11 SE will automatically synchronize the offline changes.
The new Surface Laptop SE is the cheapest Surface PC from Microsoft at a price of $249. It has an 11.6-inch screen, a 720p HD camera, and stereo speakers. Microsoft said it had tweaked parts of the system, including the UEFI code, to maximize battery life, and says the device can run for 16 hours of normal use before it needs to be recharged. It was also important that the devices are easy to open and repair yourself.
In addition to the new Surface laptop, other Windows 11 SE devices from Acer, Asus, Dell, Dynabook, Fujitsu, HP, JK-IP, Lenovo, and Positivo were announced. All cost between $249 and $349. All new computers will only be available through or for educational institutions. So far, the group has not said a word about whether the cheap student laptops should also be available outside the USA.
