Microsoft tests Login system with new design & passkeys as beta
Microsoft has been revising login and user identification with Window Hello for some time now, which of course also includes facial recognition and the use of the fingerprint reader. Windows insiders can now test the whole thing in a beta version.
New design and passkey integration
As Microsoft announced today, the redesigned and improved sign-in with Windows Hello is now being tested in the Insider Program as a beta in conjunction with Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22635.4440.
The revamped login experience not only brings redesigned icons and other visual changes, but also improved support for handling passkeys. Users will not only encounter the new design of Windows Hello when logging in after starting their PC. The interface is also used when using passkeys to log in to apps and websites.
According to one Blog entry from Microsoft developers With the passkey integration and the redesign of the entry of login data, they plan to offer a “clean user experience that makes secure and fast authentication” possible. Users can now easily and quickly choose between different login options and use passkeys or devices more intuitively, it continues.
Although passkeys are already supported under Windows 11, the process is still unnecessarily complicated and overall looks outdated. With the beta, Microsoft is also testing a new programming interface with which developers of password or passkey managers can integrate their products directly into the Windows Hello interface.
The revision also makes it possible to use passkeys on mobile devices to log in to apps and websites on the PC. The new Passkeys integration also allows data to be saved with third-party apps and synchronized with a Microsoft account. The test that is now taking place will initially take place in the beta channel based on Windows 11 version 23H2, before testing will also begin in the dev channel based on Windows 11 24H2. The new interface and functions of Windows Hello should then also be available to all other Windows 11 users over the next few months.
