More FritzBoxes start in the laboratory program
AVM is expanding the preview of FritzOS 8: Two more FritzBox models now have access to the laboratory update. The new functions promise improved security, expanded network monitoring and smart home optimizations for the popular routers.
New FritzBoxes in the test program
AVM has expanded its test program for the upcoming major feature update FritzOS 8. As the Berlin-based network specialist announced, the FritzBox models 7520 (including Type B) and 7510 Access to the lab update. Both devices are OEM variants, for example those used by 1&1, which also have to be thoroughly tested before the update is officially released. The laboratory update brings with it numerous new features. One highlight is the new graphical online monitor, which provides detailed information on the utilization of the Internet connection by individual network devices.
This gives users a better overview of their home network. In the area of security, AVM is introducing automatically retrievable IP block lists. These are intended to ward off unwanted connection attempts to the FritzBox and thus increase network security. The WireGuard VPN functionality has also been expanded: In the future, IPv6 data can also be transmitted via a WireGuard VPN tunnel.
Optimizations for Mesh
Mesh users can look forward to improved customization options. In the mesh overview, you can now assign your own names to devices in guest access and to home network devices. It is also possible to assign individual icons, which increases clarity. There are also improvements in the smart home area:
- A temperature limit can now be set for radiator controllers
- Owners of a FritzDect 350 benefit from a new window-open detection
- The routines have been expanded and now allow more precise settings for temperature, lighting and shutters
System optimization and WLAN analysis
AVM has also refined the user interface. The home page now shows the FritzBox connection status in a new graphical representation. The diagnostic function has also been expanded to include a check of the NTP services. WLAN users receive a useful analysis tool with the new visualization of WLAN usage for the last seven days. This enables better planning and optimization of the home wireless network.
Availability and outlook
The laboratory update for the FritzBox models 7520 and 7510 initially contains the changes from FritzOS 7.90, which will later be integrated into FritzOS 8. AVM points out that this is an initial version. Further functions and improvements will be added during the test phase.
