Motorola X40 Offers Latest Top Hardware Despite a Budget Phone

While other manufacturers prefer to move their current top smartphones to the lucrative high-price segment, the Lenovo subsidiary Motorola is still trying to position itself as a kind of successor to Xiaomi and OnePlus as a price breaker. The most recent example: is the new Motorola X40.

With the Motorola X40, Motorola has presented a new, surprisingly affordable high-end smartphone for the Chinese market. Sooner or later, the device will also be launched in Europe under the name Motorola Edge 40, as was the case with the previous model. The starting price is the equivalent of just under 460 euros.

The Motorola X40 offers plenty of power: the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is already under the hood, currently, probably the most powerful ARM SoC for Android-based smartphones, which with its eight computing cores reaches up to 3.2 gigahertz and around 40 percent more CPU performance delivers than its predecessor.

165 Hz display for a smooth viewing

The display of the Moto X40 is a 6.7-inch OLED panel with Full HD resolution and a refresh rate of up to 165 Hertz. The screen has a centrally located hole for the front camera below the top edge of the display. The front camera has a resolution of 60 megapixels and should even be able to deliver 8K videos in connection with the powerful Qualcomm chip.

The rear camera unit combines a 50-megapixel main sensor, a 50-megapixel ultra-wide sensor, and a 12-megapixel “portrait” camera. The Moto X40 is also up to par when it comes to storage. Depending on the model, eight or 12 gigabytes of LPDDR5X RAM and 128, 256 or 512 gigabytes of flash memory based on the new UFS 4.0 standard are on board.

The battery of the Moto X40 or probably later Motorola Edge 40 Ultra with 4600mAh is sufficiently dimensioned but not outstanding. It can be charged quickly using fast charging with up to 125 watts, although wireless charging with a maximum of 15 watts is also possible. The whole package is housed in a metal-framed body with Corning Gorilla Glass 7 covers and runs Android 13.

In China, the Moto X40 will be available from December 22 at a price of 3399 yuan for the base model with 8/128 GB, which is the equivalent of just 459 euros. The device will certainly be more expensive in this country, but should still remain below the 600 euro mark. Motorola is thus moving in a price range that was once served by providers such as OnePlus, but which now charges significantly higher prices.
