New Corning Gorilla Glass 6 launched for smartphones—Survives 15 drops

The new Corning Gorilla Glass 6 can survive 15 drops, providing strong protection to your phone.

Corning has announced its new Gorilla Glass 6, the new release is tougher than the previous models the company emphasizes. If you drop your smartphone facing downwards from a one-meter height, it will survive up to 15 drops, which is X2 better than Gorilla Glass 5, the company said.

Corning vice president and GM John Bayne said, “Corning Gorilla Glass 6 is the major improvement in Gorilla Glass 5, it is made focusing on drops from higher heights, but more importantly it is made stronger in order to survive multiple drops.”

According to the reports, smartphones are increasingly getting slimmer, and slimmer glass is weaker as compared to thick ones, Gorilla Glass may get weaker in this scenario and you may not see improvements in Gorilla glass. But Corning argues that bezel-less designs and edge-to-edge displays have led to stronger smartphones practically, previously smartphone drops used to crack the bezel first leading to glass weakness. And now the glass is all-in-all to protect itself from cracking.

Corning has also informed users about the scratch resistance, the new Gorilla Glass 6 has the same scratch resistance as the previous models, only the crack resistance is improved in glass 6, people shouldn’t expect absolutely scratchless resistance in the new model.

The Gorilla Glass 6 is going through the production phase and will be made available to smartphone makers in the next few months; you can also expect new smartphones coming with Corning Gorilla Glass 6 by the end of the year.
