New FritzBox update fixes WireGuard bug under IPv6

AVM has released an experimental update for several FritzBox models. The laboratory update brings numerous bug fixes and improvements for the Internet, WLAN and system. Users can benefit from optimized functions and displays.

AVM has released a new Fritz laboratory update for various FritzBox models. The experimental update focuses mainly on bug fixes and minor improvements in the areas of Internet, WLAN and system. The update is available for the FritzBox 7590 (and AX), 7530 (and AX), 4060 and the cable boxes 6690, 6670, 6660 and 6591.

Optimizations in the Internet area

Several display and function problems have been fixed in the Internet area. On PCP connections, the “IPv4 address on the Internet” is now correctly displayed in the connection details of the online monitor. In addition, display errors when sharing existing Internet connections in IP client mode have been eliminated.

Another fix concerns WireGuard LAN-LAN connections: DNS name resolution and assignment of AAAA records under IPv6 now work reliably. The display of manually configured DNS servers without DNS over TLS (DoT) in the connection details has also been corrected.

Wi-Fi improvements

In the WLAN area, the update addresses two specific problems. Firstly, the unnecessarily long flashing of the WLAN LED after changes to WLAN settings when guest access is deactivated has been fixed. Secondly, the WLAN LED no longer indicates WLAN readiness prematurely after a restart or a setting change. There are also changes that will start on a device-specific basis.

System optimization and other changes

An important improvement concerns the initial setup of the FritzBox. The sender name created during this process is now saved correctly, which was not the case before. According to AVM, further improvements have also been made:

From the changelog

  • The stability when using WLAN Mesh has been increased.
  • A problem when making calls via certain Internet telephony providers has been fixed.
  • The display of port forwarding in the home network has been improved.
  • An error in the display of data throughput in the online monitor has been corrected.

Note on using laboratory versions

The FritzOS laboratory update is available for the models mentioned and can be installed via the FritzBox settings – if a laboratory version is already being used. Alternatively, AVM also offers the update for manual download on its special laboratory website It is important to note that Fritz Lab updates are experimental versions and AVM does not offer support in case of problems. The versions can be unstable or show unexpected behavior.

It is therefore recommended to only install such updates on devices that are not used for critical applications. Before installation, a backup of the current configuration should always be created. What do you think of the Fritz Lab updates? Have you already tried it or are you planning to install it? Feel free to share your experiences and thoughts in the comments!
