New Netflix prices? Streaming more expensive, first price increases in Europe

Netflix records record profits and millions of new users. But the joy could soon be dampened for German customers: after price increases in other European countries, tariffs may also be adjusted here.

Streaming giant on the road to success

There are at least indications that the next price adjustments are coming, despite new record revenues. Because Netflix can look back on a successful third quarter of 2024. The streaming provider recorded a record profit of 2.36 billion dollars (around 2.17 billion euros) – an increase of 41 percent compared to the same period last year.

The number of subscribers also increased significantly: 5.07 million new users were acquired, bringing the total number of paying customers to 282.72 million. A key factor in this success was the advertising-financed subscription model introduced last year. In the countries where it is available, it accounted for over 50 percent of new sign-ups in the third quarter.

The number of ad-supported subscription memberships increased by 35 percent compared to the previous quarter. There were rumors about upcoming price increases exactly a year ago. Like that First Online magazine reportsNetflix has already announced that it will raise prices in some European markets. The tariffs have already been adjusted in Spain and Italy: the standard subscription with advertising now costs 6.99 euros per month instead of the previous 5.49 euros. The premium subscription has also become more expensive and is now 19.99 euros per month.

Is there a risk of a price increase in Germany too?

This development suggests that German Netflix users will soon have to pay more. Customers in this country currently pay 4.99 euros per month for the standard subscription with advertising – two euros less than in Spain and Italy. It wouldn’t be a surprise if Netflix adjusted its prices in Germany to the new European level. Additional membership places can be added for 4.99 euros per month. Incidentally, Netflix expects that advertising will only become the main growth driver for new customers from 2026 onwards. Analysts also warn that the positive effect of the recent “password raid” could only be temporary.
