New Snapdragon 870 5G For Affordable Smartphones

With the new Snapdragon 870 5GQualcomm is bringing a new smartphone platform onto the market that will primarily be used in low-cost, high-end devices. Among other things, OnePlus wants to use the new SoC in its devices.

Qualcomm will probably present the new Snapdragon 870 5G Mobile Platform later in the day, but all the important details have already been made public. Basically, the chip is a kind of faster version of the Snapdragon 865 used in last year’s top smartphones.

A bit more clock speed, a new name, and the new flagship SoC is ready

The basis here is again a Qualcomm Kryo 585 CPU, which is combined with the Adreno 650 GPU. In addition, the Snapdragon X55 5G modem is used again. The main difference to the “predecessor” is a further increase in the maximum CPU clock rates compared to the Snapdragon 865 Plus.

Instead of a maximum clock rate of up to 3.1 gigahertz, 100 megahertz are added to the new chip, so that it comes to a boost clock of up to 3.2 gigahertz. Of course, this only applies to the high-end cores of the eight-core processor. Basically, Qualcomm continues to market its predecessor with the Snapdragon 870 with a slightly higher clock rate in an otherwise unchanged form. The Snapdragon X55 5G modem in combination with the Snapdragon 870 5G ensures that 5G is also supported in sub-6 GHz and mmWave networks.

With the new chip, Qualcomm is responding to demand from the smartphone industry, where they want a new platform for flagship smartphones that cost hundreds of euros less than the absolute top models equipped with the new Snapdragon 888. Presumably, you want to address customers who do not have the financial means to invest in the latest top-of-the-range equipment.

Accordingly, the Chinese provider OnePlus, among others, is said to be among the first manufacturers to use the Snapdragon 870 5G in their devices. The company announced that they want to use the chip, although a cheaper model from the OnePlus 9 series should be equipped with it.

The first new smartphone models with the Snapdragon 870 5G should come on the market this quarter. In addition to OnePlus, Qualcomm’s previously published marketing materials also name Oppo, Motorola, Xiaomi and iQOO as the first buyers. Corresponding references to new devices with the new chip had already surfaced in the last few weeks.
